Moulin Rouge! The Musical is based on the 2001 film of the same name. The original film was directed by the esteemed film director Baz Luhrmann and written by Luhrmann and screenwriter Craig Pearce. The stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge! It premiered in Boston in 2018 and finally opened on Broadway in 2019. By 2021, the musical premiere in London’s Westend, followed by an Australian and a North American Tour in 2022. The show also hired Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers, while the book was written by John Logan. But the excellent creative personnel doesn’t stop there. The musical brought in the best talents on Broadway, including award-winning choreographer Sonya Tayeh, scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Catherine Zuber, and lighting designer Justin Townsend. The music supervision, orchestration, and arrangement are led by Tony Award-winner Justin Levine.
Upon taking over Broadway in 2019, Moulin Rouge! was incredibly received by both fans and critics. For starters, the musical brought in numerous accolades. For its original Boston production, Moulin Rouge! won seven Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards from its 12 nominations. The following year, the musical won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Choreography. Other prestigious awards earned by the production include five Drama Desk Awards, two Drama League Awards, and 11 Outer Critics Circle Awards. Over in London’s West End, the musical won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Costume Design.
The musical also caught the admiration and respect of countless professional critics upon its premiere on Broadway. The New York Stage review gave the musical a perfect ten for its “stunning array of costumes,” “glittering bustiers, satiny robes, and body-hugging gowns.” The writer also praised scenic designer Derek McLane for turning the venue into “a crystal-studded, heart-shaped, hopelessly romantic fantasyland.” Over at the New York Times, renowned Broadway critic Ben Brantley wrote, “In “Moulin Rouge,” life is beautiful, in a way reality never is. All is permitted and forgiven in the name of love. Bohemian poverty is exquisitely picturesque. Stardom is around the corner for the gifted and hungry. And even songs you thought you never wanted to hear again pulse with irresistible new sex appeal.”
Meanwhile, the USA Today called Mouline Rouge! The Musical “a wildly entertaining adaption.” This statement is the result of the writer’s high regard for the rearranged pop hits. “Imagine Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” but as a steamy Spanish tango. Now imagine that’s been mashed up with Britney Spears’s “Toxic” and The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army,” and vigorously performed by a group of hot-blooded bohemians in early 1900s Paris.”
“Maximum pleasure! Emotionally engaging!” – NY1
“It’s hard to catch a breath!” – Entertainment Weekly.
