Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was all the rage, "Some Like It Hot" draws comparisons to another award winning Broadway musical, Chicago. Jazz elements influence the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians trying to survive on speakeasy gigs. Their lives face an unexpected turn of events when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled venue and need to begin cross-dressing to protect their identities as new criminal targets.
Joe reinvents himself as Josephine, while Jerry transforms into Daphne and the two join an all-female swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a challenging part of their story as the two men try to earn her affection without getting caught. The growth each character tests their strengths and teaches them valuable lessons about themselves.
If the story sounds familiar, it's because "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway adaptation of the 1959 film of the same name, which starred film icons Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The film was based on the 1953 French movie Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most culturally relevant movies in American cinema. The movie earned three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was selected for the first class of 25 films chosen by the US National Film Registry for preservation.
