Happening specifically during the time span in the middle of the 1832 French rebellion in Paris, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris, France who was convicted for almost two decades due to a small act of theft for his nephew. Despite nearing the end of his sentence, he escapes and seeks a second chance to live his life; Jean Valjean then takes on a different identity as Monsieur Madeleine, while still protecting his newfound lifestyle and avoiding Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean back to prison.
Taking place over a period of almost two decades across the musical's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Valjean becomes involved by accidental means with a few main characters throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of his factory laborers who mothers an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the foster daughter of Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s baby; Marius, a young local fighting for the insurgency and the true love of Cosette. Side characters featured in the play consist of the Thénardiers, greedy innkeepers who also lead a street gang and are engrossed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their child, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and comrades of the government opposition including Gavroche, a naive but cunning child, and the revolt’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.
This vibrant ensemble of characters who meet by fate and their personal stories are presented beautifully on live stage, not just with its 1800s French-based outfit and stage creations, but principally with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With famous numbers including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing song list, Les Mis is able to communicate the real and unmasked personalities hiding behind each character that unveils the magic of Les Mis on stage.
