Set mainly during the period in the middle of the widespread rebellion in 1832 in France, the musical is the life story of Jean Valjean, a resident of France who was pronounced guilty for 19 years because of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. Despite nearing the end of his sentence, he runs away and seeks a new life free from the law; Valjean then takes on a different name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still protecting his newfound lifestyle and avoiding Javert, an officer with a rigid belief in the law and intent on capturing and bringing Jean Valjean to justice.
Taking place over a duration of approximately twenty years across the musical's entire production, Valjean becomes intertwined through fated encounters with a few important figures in every part of the musical – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory laborers who mothers an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive child of Madeleine, who is in fact Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student fighting for the insurgency and the true love of Cosette. Side individuals seen in Les Misérables consist of the Thénardiers, immoral innkeepers who also lead a street gang and are consumed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their daughter, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the insurgency namely Gavroche, a naive but talented child, and the revolt’s fearless leader, Enjolras.
