More than 40 years ago, a star show was born when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel created the original play script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (previously in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 book of the matching name, the plot of Les Mis was adapted into a theater play as a show only sung from start to finish, which was an enormous achievement in that era.
Following a limited season performed in French in Paris, France, there was already a growing demand to make a more accessible show, and once Cameron Macikintosh heard the score, he was so inspired and announced he was going to write an English version hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the English songs. The English production of the musical only debuted with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and larger audience with the English version, the show rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and top location, and ran for almost 20 years. The West End play then moved once more to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until present day. Adding together all its runs since its first showing in 1980, Les Misérables is actually the longest-running stage play of all time.
With 37 years in London alone and not even counting its shows in foreign locations, especially its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is undeniable that this global hit endures and is smashing in the perspective of the show's attendees. The narrative and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and selfless love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings because of the apparent heart beneath the surface of each character and act staged. Les Mis has become so critically-acclaimed that it has been adapted to motion pictures several times and has been met with glowing reviews even on a separate medium.
