Originally a 1924 New York Daily News comic strip by Harold Gray, the story of Annie found its way to the stage in 1977 during its spectacular Broadway premiere. The production was nominated ten times at the 31st Annual Tony Awards, winning in seven categories, including the holy trifecta of Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. At the 22nd Drama Desk Awards, it notched another seven wins, Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, to name two, with a GRAMMY Award for Best Cast Show Album as the cherry on top.
“Annie delivers a tingle that starts at the spine and wends its way toward the tear ducts.” – The Washington Post
“Overflowing! Big, warm-hearted and funny!” – New York Post
Due to this smashing success, Annie would later lead to several revivals in both Broadway and West End, appearances on television and the silver screen, sequels, tours, novelizations, musical recordings, and so much more. It eventually became the historic pop culture juggernaut it is today, having visited over 30 countries and translated into 28 languages.
